North Coast Brewing Collaborates in DC Fundraiser

Moody, Monk, and Eubanks

Chef Robert Wiedmaier’s Brasserie Beck is well known in the Washington DC area both for its selection of over 100 Belgian beers and its award-winning kitchen. On October 3, 2010, the Brasserie collaborated with North Coast Brewing Co., pairing our American-brewed Belgian-style beers with an exciting menu. The dinner was a fundraiser for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The sold-out event was attended by the Institute’s Chairman, T.S. Monk III, and Kevin Eubanks, former musical director of The Tonight Show, now director of the Institute’s Jazz in the Classroom program, as well as NCBC founders, President Mark Ruedrich, Executive VP Tom Allen and Senior VP Doug Moody. Supporting America’s Art Form

Monterey Jazz Festival boardmember Client Eastwood with Mark Ruedrich

Mark Ruedrich, brewmaster, with Monterey Jazz Fest boardmember, Clint Eastwood

We travelled to Monterey in September to take part in the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, the longest continuously-running Jazz event in the world. For the fifth straight year, North Coast was the sponsoring brewery for the Jazz festival (having replaced Anheuser-Busch). The brewery first came to the attention to the festival organizers upon the release of our “Brother Thelonious,” the beer honoring Jazz icon Thelonious Monk, in April of 2006. Read More

Brother Thelonious Quartet Review in All About Jazz

North Coast Brewing Brother Thelonious Quartet CDReviewed by Mark Corroto in All About Jazz:

Nobody can deny the distinctive signature of Thelonious Monk‘s music. Written for simple piano, bass, and drums, it is a remarkable blending of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Now, expand his conception into a quintet setting and the challenge as Monk would say, to “lift the bandstand,” presents itself to the musicians and arrangers.

Assigning such a task to six distinguished graduates of The Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz finds the music in great hands. Featuring a core quintet of Helen Sung (piano), Alan Hampton (bass), James Alsenders (drums), Wayne Escoffery (tenor saxophone), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) and adding vocalist Gretchen Parlato on one track, the group recorded six Monk classic compositions and four original tracks. The music was produced by North Coast Brewing Company, maker of a very nice dark Belgian-style ale called Brother Thelonious, with a painting of Monk on the label, piously dressed as a monk.

All the proceeds of the sale of this fabulous disc go The Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz, as if we need another reason to pour a cold one when listening to Brother Thelonious.
