North Coast Brewing Goes to Sweden
Here’s a flash slideshow from our trip to meet the people who are making North Coast Brewing happen in Sweden!
Brother Thelonious Review by BeerSweden
“Trading 4s is a jazz term used to describe when two soloists play alternating four-bar phrases, as though they were having a lively conversation with chords.
“In North Coast Brewing’s tribute beer to Jazz legend Thelonious Monk the brewery trades 4s not with musical instruments but with yeast and malt. The result is a playful duet in the chord of B (B standing of course for Belgium).” Read the whole review on the BeerSweden website.

Tasting the Brother Thelonious
From Definition Ale:
“Beer and Jazz are seldom mentioned in the same circles, however craft beer and jazz are increasingly finding the same home. The North Coast Brewing Co. has celebrated this fact with their Belgian Dark Strong Ale called Brother Thelonious. Anyone passionate about jazz music should instantly pair the name to Thelonious Monk, a marvel jazz pianist who is known as one of the giants of American music. The name pairs so well with this beer because it is a style traditionally brewed by monks. So there you have it, the Brother Thelonious is a Belgian Abbey Style beer brewed in a style made famous by monks, and to honor Thelonious Monk.
“What we have here then is one of America’s most masterful breweries brining to us a historic beer style mastered by Belgian Monks, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Brother Thelonious goes to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, which allows the world’s most promising young musicians the opportunity to learn under the tutelage of America’s jazz masters. I’m impressed. Not to mention that the beer is 9.4% abv, and claims a classic mahogany red color – I’d say that so far Brother Thelonious has hit all the right notes.
“The mouthfeel is soft and easy with a light silky character and moderate carbonation. It will finish clean and lightly crisp at first when it is colder, but eventually becomes a warming and more soothing drink as the ambient room temperature gets to it. I would enjoy this beer with just about anyone, and with a wide variety of foods. Creamy and old cheeses will work very well here, so will roasted meats, anything from the grill, or chocolate or fruit based desserts.”

Supporting America’s Art Form
We travelled to Monterey in September to take part in the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, the longest continuously-running Jazz event in the world. For the fifth straight year, North Coast was the sponsoring brewery for the Jazz festival (having replaced Anheuser-Busch). The brewery first came to the attention to the festival organizers upon the release of our “Brother Thelonious,” the beer honoring Jazz icon Thelonious Monk, in April of 2006. Read More
North Coast Scores Big at World Beer Championships
North Coast Brewing was well received at the recent BTI World Beer Championships in Chicago scoring three medals (2 Golds and a Silver). The Brewery’s 20th Anniversary Ale, an amazing beer brewed with agave nectar, scored a 93 in the professional blind tasting and was awarded a Gold Medal as was Le Merle Belgian Style Saison with a score of 90. Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale was close behind with a rating of 89. This recognition solidifies North Coast’s preeminence as a brewer of Belgian style ales and teams these beers with their Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale which has won four Gold Medals at the World Beer Championships as well as medals at the Great American Beer Fest and the World Beer Cup.
Brother Thelonious Quartet Review in All About Jazz
Reviewed by Mark Corroto in All About Jazz:
Nobody can deny the distinctive signature of Thelonious Monk‘s music. Written for simple piano, bass, and drums, it is a remarkable blending of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Now, expand his conception into a quintet setting and the challenge as Monk would say, to “lift the bandstand,” presents itself to the musicians and arrangers.
Assigning such a task to six distinguished graduates of The Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz finds the music in great hands. Featuring a core quintet of Helen Sung (piano), Alan Hampton (bass), James Alsenders (drums), Wayne Escoffery (tenor saxophone), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) and adding vocalist Gretchen Parlato on one track, the group recorded six Monk classic compositions and four original tracks. The music was produced by North Coast Brewing Company, maker of a very nice dark Belgian-style ale called Brother Thelonious, with a painting of Monk on the label, piously dressed as a monk.
All the proceeds of the sale of this fabulous disc go The Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz, as if we need another reason to pour a cold one when listening to Brother Thelonious.

North Coast Brewing’s Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale took on a new persona with the introduction of The Brother Thelonious Quintet in 2009. The quintet is made up of Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance alumni with Helen Sung, class of ’97, on piano; Alan Hampton, class of ’05, on bass; James Alsanders, class of ’05, on drums; Wayne Escoffery, class of ’99, on tenor sax and Ambrose Akinmusire, class of ’07, on trumpet. Vocalist Gretchen Parlato, class of ’03, performs on the closing track. The Brother Thelonious Quintet CD includes new arrangements of six classic Thelonious Monk compositions along with four original tunes composed by members of the quintet.
Produced by T. S. Monk and North Coast Brewing’s Doug Moody, this project was entirely underwritten by North Coast Brewing. 100% of sales proceeds from the CD are donated to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to further international Jazz education programs.
