Description

Legendary Jazz bassist Ron Carter, in his liner notes, calls the Brother Thelonious Quintet "a breath of fresh air" and suggests some "serious listening" to this group that "I would stop to hear at the drop of a drum stick."

North Coast Brewing's Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale has taken on a new persona with the introduction of The Brother Thelonious Quintet. The quintet is made up of Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance alumni with Helen Sung, class of 97, on piano; Alan Hampton, class of 05, on bass; James Alsanders, class of 05, on drums; Wayne Escoffery, class of 99, on tenor sax and Ambrose Akinmusire, class of 07, on trumpet. Vocalist Gretchen Parlato, class of 03, performs on the closing track.

Produced by T. S. Monk and North Coast Brewing's Doug Moody, the project was entirely underwritten by North Coast Brewing. 100% of sales proceeds from the CD are donated to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to further international Jazz education programs.
