Rothstein Experiment

Friday, May 31

One dinner show at 7:30 pm with two – 45 minute sets and an intermission
Doors at 6:15 pm

New Standards: Expanding the Jazz Songbook
exploring modern and ancient themes in the present tense.  An evening of songs and conversation, offering a behind the scenes look into the process of a working jazz ensemble.

Jill Rothstein – vocals; Matt Rothstein –saxophone, vocals; Tom Aiken – piano, keyboard, melodica; Jacob Turner – guitar; Pierre Archain – upright bass; Gabriel Yañez – percussion.

Leaders of the Rothstein Experiment, Matt and Jill Rothstein, are accomplished musicians, arrangers, and composers. Both were raised in rural Lake County, and the pair have been leading musical ensembles and music programs all over Northern California, for more than a decade.

Matt was recognized by DownBeat Magazine and the Grammy Foundation as a prodigious talent while in high school.  Jill began composing music at the tender age of eight and was the 2007 award winner for music theory and composition at Azusa Pacific University.

Rounding out the Experiment are: master musician and educator Tom Aiken, on piano, keyboards and melodica; musical polymath Jacob Turner, equally adept in symphonic, pop, and jazz contexts, on guitar and tuba; the muscular virtuosity and poetic phrasing of the singular Pierre Archain, on upright bass; and the Mendocino Coast’s own rhythmic alchemist supreme, Gabriel Yañez, on percussion.
